The many different landscapes of Northern Limburg are unique for hikers. In a fairly small area you will get to know bork forests, Peel landscapes, stream valleys, Meuse banks and drifting dunes. You will not find a more varied area. De Maasduinen National Park is the longest river dune belt in the Netherlands, located between Arcen and Wellerlooi. You walk in a beautiful nature reserve of over 4,000 km, known for its so-called parabolic dunes and rare animals and plants.

The Zwart Water area is located south of the Maasduinen chain. The soil here consists of a number of old Maas beds. De Venkoelen is in the middle of the area in the largest water and was created by dying. Around it there is forest that has been planted from 1930. The northeast side of the forest is interspersed with small grasslands. It forms a transition to the Vreewater. The area is excellent to explore thanks to two hiking routes.
